San Pedro La Laguna is a Tz'utujil town at the foot of San Pedro volcano, known as the «Land of the Hummingbird» after its ancient name, Tz'unun Ya'. It combines a traditional upper town, with its church and community life, with a waterfront full of Spanish schools, cafés and travelers. It was a pioneer in Guatemala in banning single-use plastics in 2016.

History
How San Pedro La Laguna came to be
The first to arrive found the lake, the volcanoes and the forest; others came after, and each arrival left its mark.
- Before 1524Tz'unun Ya'. The territory was Tz'utujil and depended on the kingdom's capital, in present-day Santiago Atitlán. Its ancient name, Tz'unun Ya', joins the Tz'utujil words for hummingbird and water.
- 1524-1550Conquest and founding. After Pedro de Alvarado conquered the Tz'utujil in 1524, the Franciscan Friar Pedro de Betanzos founded the town on its present site between 1547 and 1550, under the name San Pedro de Patzununá.
- 1643«La Laguna» is born. An order by the royal inspector Antonio Lara to Hispanicize Indigenous names gave rise to the name «La Laguna».
- 1824 and 1902Fire and earthquake. On September 17, 1824, a fire destroyed the church, and the earthquake of April 2, 1902, badly damaged it again.
- October 2016Goodbye to plastic. The municipality banned disposable bags, packaging and trays, and banana leaves, baskets and handmade paper came back in their place.
- 2024First woman mayor. Cándida González Chipir took office as mayor, the first Maya woman to hold that post in Central America.

San Pedro Apóstol
San Pedro Apóstol: June 29 (Deguate: fair from June 27 to 30). The fair of San Pedro Apóstol (Saint Peter the Apostle) begins with a novena and includes Masses, an alborada (dawn celebration), a procession, the crowning of the Indigenous queen Rumeaal Tinaamit, marimba and dances such as the Torito, the dance of the town elders and the ceremonial Xaq'ajawii. During Holy Week carpets of sawdust, flowers and vegetables are made, and since 2022 the Festival del Colibrí (Hummingbird Festival) has been held with figures made from recycled materials and murals. There are weavers' cooperatives using backstrap looms and tours of coffee farms.

Mayan traditional dress
The traditional dress of San Pedro La Laguna
Women wear a multicolored huipil (traditional woven blouse), corte (wrap skirt), embroidered sash, hair ribbon and tzute (headcloth). The traditional men's dress features a jaspe (ikat) shirt and trousers and a wide-brimmed hat; today it is worn mostly by some older men, although Prensa Libre (2021) counts San Pedro among the few places in Sololá where it can still be seen.

Sources don't name a dish of the town's own. In the lower town there are plenty of inexpensive set lunches and pupusas, along with international cuisine, and Guatemalan cooking classes are offered; the municipality grows coffee, chickpeas, peanuts, chile guaque (a dried chili), avocado, corn and beans.
