History

How Santa Clara La Laguna came to be

The first to arrive found the lake, the volcanoes and the forest; others came after, and each arrival left its mark.

  1. Before 1524K'iche' territory. Before the Spaniards arrived the area was inhabited by K'iche' people; the place's original name is unknown.
  2. 1581-1583First colonial records. A 1581 tribute list already mentions Santa Clara as a dependency of Tecpán Atitlán (today Sololá); in 1583 the 'Título de los indios de Santa Clara La Laguna' was signed.
  3. 1640-1654Land and encomienda. A lawsuit with San Juan La Laguna ended in 1640 with the lands split in half. In 1654 the town was granted in encomienda to Antonio Echavarría.
  4. 1768-1818From annex to parish. Between 1768 and 1770 Archbishop Cortés y Larraz counted 645 inhabitants and recorded it as an annex of San Pedro La Laguna; in 1818 the parish of Santa Clara was created.
  5. 1838-1872Los Altos and Sololá. It was part of the State of Los Altos from 1838 to 1840 and, when Quiché was created in 1872, remained in Sololá.
  6. 2010Municipal Regional Park. CONAP registered Cerro Chui Rax Amolo' as a municipal regional park (Resolution 475/2010, of October 25, 2010), managed by the municipality.

Mayan traditional dress

The traditional dress of Santa Clara La Laguna

The women's dress documented by the Museo Ixchel has a black huipil (traditional woven blouse) woven on a backstrap loom and a dark blue corte (wrap skirt) from a foot loom, joined by a pink randa (decorative joining stitch) that contrasts with the dark backgrounds; the design is sober, almost unadorned. Today it is worn mainly at cultural and educational events. No description of the men's dress was found.
