What makes San Juan La Laguna unique

Naïf painting, natural dyes and Tz'utujil cooperatives

San Juan is a small, tidy Tz'utujil town where art is part of the street: galleries of naïf painting, murals and decorated streets greet everyone arriving at the dock. Its cooperatives, many of them formed by women, showcase backstrap-loom weaving and dyeing with plants, bark and minerals, as well as honey from native bees, cacao and medicinal plants. The tourism network is run by the residents themselves.

History

How San Juan La Laguna came to be

The first to arrive found the lake, the volcanoes and the forest; others came after, and each arrival left its mark.

  1. Before 1524Xe' Kuku' Juyu'. The Annals of the Kaqchikels call the place Xe' Kuku' Juyu', 'below the Tinaja hill'. The lake was under Tz'utujil rule until the mid-15th century, when the Kaqchikels defeated them.
  2. 1523-1524Spanish conquest. Troops led by Pedro de Alvarado, with Kaqchikel support, conquered the Tz'utujil capital, Chiya'. In colonial times, K'iche' families settled in the mountain villages.
  3. 1623-1643Encomienda and today's name. In 1623 Pedro Núñez de Barahona took possession of the encomienda of Atitlán, which included San Juan; the current Hispanicized name has been used since 1643.
  4. 1838-1872Los Altos and Sololá. From April 3, 1838 it was part of the short-lived State of Los Altos, which rejoined Guatemala in 1840. With the decree of August 12, 1872 it remained in the department of Sololá.
  5. 1960-1996Textile cooperatives are born. The armed conflict left many women without a livelihood; out of that need came weaving cooperatives that revived natural dyeing.
  6. 2019Kiaq'asiwaan lookout. INGUAT and the municipality opened the park and lookout on Kiaq'asiwaan hill, with an investment of Q1.5 million.

Patron saint and fair

San Juan Bautista

San Juan Bautista: June 24 (feast of Saint John the Baptist). Tz'utujil naïf painting portrays the town's daily life, ceremonies and legends; Angelina Quic Ixtamer was San Juan's first woman oil painter. Weavers dye with sacatinta (a native indigo plant), palo de tinto (logwood), achiote (annatto), avocado bark and cochineal, with more than 18 documented shades. During Holy Week the cofradías (religious brotherhoods) build andas (processional platforms), fruit arches and sawdust carpets.

Mayan traditional dress

The traditional dress of San Juan La Laguna

The women's traditional huipil (traditional woven blouse) has 24 squares in honor of Saint John the Baptist, with colors evoking the sky, the water and nature, and figures of ducks and lake birds worked in brocade. Men wear a shirt and trousers of jaspe cloth (tie-dyed, ikat-style), wool rodilleras (hip wraps), a black gabán (woollen overgarment), a morral (shoulder bag) and a hat. Many people wear their traditional dress every day.

Traditional food

What to eat in San Juan La Laguna

In the towns around the lake, especially the Tz'utujil ones, patín is popular: small lake fish in a tomato and chili sauce, wrapped in banana or maxán leaves. The municipality produces high-altitude coffee, avocado, cacao and corn.
