History

How Santa Cruz La Laguna came to be

The first to arrive found the lake, the volcanoes and the forest; others came after, and each arrival left its mark.

  1. Before 1524Kaqchikel territory. Before the Conquest the area was inhabited by Kaqchikel people.
  2. 1540sFranciscan reducción and encomienda. The town is thought to have been founded in the 1540s, when the Franciscans formed reducciones, or 'pueblos de indios' (resettled native towns). It was part of the encomienda of Atitlán, which Pedro Núñez de Barahona took possession of in 1623.
  3. 1643-1690The name 'La Laguna' and the dispute over Tzununá. The name 'La Laguna' dates from 1643. Around 1650 and again in 1690, Santa Cruz won the lawsuits against San Marcos La Laguna over the lands of Tzununá; in 1690 the Recordación Florida credited it with about 1,200 inhabitants.
  4. 1838-1872Los Altos and the creation of Quiché. From April 3, 1838 it was part of the State of Los Altos, which rejoined Guatemala in 1840. On August 12, 1872, when Quiché was created, Santa Cruz La Laguna remained in Sololá.
  5. 20th centuryThe town moves. According to the SESAN assessment (2017), the original settlement, about ten blocks away, was destroyed by a flood some hundred years ago, and the town moved; the earlier church was made of bajareque (wattle and daub) and stood in Tzampoj.
  6. 2005-todayStan and new opportunities. Hurricane Stan hit the municipality hard in October 2005. In 2010 the CECAP training center opened, teaching trades and cooking, and it now runs a school café.
