What makes Santiago Atitlán unique

Heart of the Tz'utujil people

Santiago Atitlán, on the bay between the Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro volcanoes, is considered the capital of the Tz'utujil people and the largest municipality on the lake. It preserves its language, its cofradías (religious brotherhoods) and a dress of strong identity, with the tocoyal as its emblem. Here the Rilaj Mam, or Maximón, the «Venerable Grandfather» and ancestral guardian of the Tz'utujil, is revered.

History

How Santiago Atitlán came to be

The first to arrive found the lake, the volcanoes and the forest; others came after, and each arrival left its mark.

  1. Before 1524Tz'utujil kingdom. The Tz'utujil kingdom had its capital at Chuitinamit, across the bay. Its name is usually translated as «those of the flowery place».
  2. April 1524Conquest. Pedro de Alvarado, with Kaqchikel allies, defeated the Tz'utujil and took their capital; sources give different dates for the battle.
  3. 1547Town and Franciscan parish. Around 1547 the Franciscans founded the town on its present site, together with the parish of Santiago Apóstol (Saint James the Apostle); in colonial times it was the encomienda «Atitlán de la Real Corona».
  4. August 12, 1872Part of Sololá. With the creation of the department of Quiché, the decree that reorganized the territory kept Santiago Atitlán within Sololá.
  5. 1981-1990Years of violence and memory. On July 28, 1981, Father Stanley Rother, the town's parish priest, was murdered. On December 2, 1990, the army fired on unarmed civilians, killing 14 and wounding 21, and the community later secured the withdrawal of the military post; today that site is the Parque de la Paz (Peace Park).
  6. TodayTz'utujil capital. With 49,631 inhabitants according to Aprende Guate, it lives from farming, fishing, handicrafts, trade and tourism, and keeps its cofradías and its language alive.

Patron saint and fair

Santiago Apóstol

Santiago Apóstol: July 25 (Aprende Guate: July 23 to 26; Deguate: July 23 to 27). The cofradías care for sacred images and rites; the cofradía of the Rilaj Mam (Maximón) looks after him, and during Holy Week it washes his garments in the lake, brings him to his chapel by the square, and on Good Friday he goes out in procession accompanying the Cristo Sepultado (Entombed Christ). The July fair includes the election of the Indigenous queen Riiy Rumaam Tz'utujil P'op, marimba, competitions on the lake and dances such as La Conquista, the Torito and the Mexicanos. Weaving and embroidery can be explored at the Asociación Cojolyá and with weavers' collectives.

Mayan traditional dress

The traditional dress of Santiago Atitlán

Women wear a white huipil (traditional woven blouse) with burgundy stripes, woven on a backstrap loom and covered with embroidered birds and flowers; a jaspe (ikat) corte (wrap skirt) woven on a foot loom, traditionally worn without a sash; and a perraje (shawl) with pompoms. Its most emblematic garment is the tocoyal (xk'ap), a woven ribbon about 20 meters long wound around the head like a halo, symbolizing the rainbow. Men wear knee-length trousers hand-embroidered with birds and geometric figures and a jaspe sash; Prensa Libre (2021) counts Santiago among the few places where some men still wear their community's dress.

What to eat in Santiago Atitlán

Among the dishes sources associate with the town are patín (a small lake fish), kaq'ik (spiced turkey soup), pulique (a Maya stew), chirmol atiteco (local tomato salsa) and tamales de chipilín (tamales with a native leafy herb). Fishing is one of the main activities and tilapia is among the most eaten foods; at the market you can eat for very little.
